Telford, 29/05/22 – Charity of the Year – Race for Life
On Sunday 29th of May, some of the nFocus team took part in their second fundraising event of the year, Race for Life. Following on from their successful March 10k Step challenge (raised £1,914.75), the nFocus team were delighted to continue doing their bit for their charity of the year, Cancer Research UK.
Over a century of life-changing research, Cancer Research UK was formed 20 years ago in 2002. Although, their history goes back much further to 1902. Over the last 40 years, cancer survival in the UK has doubled. In the 1970s, just 1 in 4 people survived their disease for 10 years or more. Today, 2 in 4 survive. Their ambition is to accelerate progress and see 3 in 4 patients surviving the disease by 2034.
The Race for Life events encourages everyone of all ages and abilities to take part in a 5k or 10k run/walk in their local area to raise money for the charity’s research. The money raised enables scientists to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer – helping to save more lives. Their tagline is: ‘We all have a reason to Race. Who will you Race for?’ and with inspiring Deborah James in mind and other people we know, we were on mission to help raise money for research into all 200 types of cancer including bowel cancer that Deborah is tirelessly campaigning for.
Spring is an ideal time to commit to getting a little more active so the Telford team did 5k walk. The day started off with rain but luckily it held off during the race then timely, dark grey clouds reappeared when they reached the finish line! Our Test Consultant, Michael also took part in the event in his area and ran a cracking 10k race!
As this was the first in-person race since the pandemic, it was great atmosphere seeing many people dressed up in pink or fancy dress, there was even one duck! Once everyone sorted out their race number signs, we did a little warm up dance routine organised by the event, followed by a quiet reflection to think about the people that we have lost to cancer and reminding ourselves why we were there.
Some people brought family along for support. Amy Corcoran, our Client Engagement Lead said: “I brought my two kids along on their scooters and they loved it. We all had a fab time and raised some much needed money for a great cause. The kids are super happy with their medals and can’t wait to tell their teachers after half-term. I kept them motivated by asking them to ‘beat the duck’, so thanks to the fella who wore that outfit!”
Together, we have raised grand total of £3,181 so far! Fantastic efforts all around! And that is not all…as we have colleagues who will be doing the same event later on this month, as well as some who have signed up for June’s 300 miles cycling challenge. We are looking forward to spurring them on and seeing their progress during this month. Do look out for updates on our social media and check out their pages if you wish to sponsor us!!
