Friday, 6th December – London: After running our Academy for the past three years, we’ve observed a significant gender imbalance in Computer Science degrees, with a much higher ratio of male to female students. This disparity highlights the need for targeted support to encourage more women to pursue careers in technology.
Having undertaken some research, we’ve decided that we’d like to try and do something to support this cause. With that in mind, we’re proud to announce a new pilot scheme in collaboration with Shooters Hill 6th Form College in Southeast London, aimed at empowering future tech leaders.
This groundbreaking initiative offers a successful young woman both financial and mentoring support throughout her Computer Science degree, with the incredible opportunity of a guaranteed role in nFocus’ award-winning Graduate SDET Academy upon graduation. By offering this support, we hope to inspire more women to enter the tech field and bridge the gender gap.
Additionally, the scheme also provides all STEM students at the college with valuable career advice and hands-on workshops, offering an introduction to the world of IT and software testing.
The nFocus team was warmly welcomed by Shooters Hill College for the launch of the initiative. The event brought together 45 STEM students for breakfast and the inaugural Careers Conference. Discussions covered topics such as the rapid growth of the UK tech industry and the key personality traits of successful IT professionals. The students’ enthusiasm and engagement made the day truly memorable for the nFocus team. A special shoutout goes to the quiz-winning team, Dreamwork Makes the Team Work!
After a break for lunch, the female students were introduced to the nFocus Graduate SDET Academy and given an overview of the proposed support scheme. This was followed by a Q&A session with nFocus team members Amy Corcoran, Nethma Wimalasuriya, and Fathima Jamal-Deen, who shared their journeys into the traditionally male-dominated world of IT and the successes they have achieved. The students were a credit to Shooters Hill College, asking thoughtful and professional questions that sparked meaningful discussions.
Special thanks must be given to SHC’s Michelle Kingsmill and Brigid Gyimah for all of their hard work in making the day such a great success and to the students and faculty of Shooters Hill College for making the nFocus team feel so welcome.
We are really looking forward to our next event in the New Year!
